Should You Buy Processed Food for Your Survival Pantry?

In homes across the country and around the world, people are stocking up and building a survival pantry in case of a disaster. Some people do it to survive difficult times of economic problems and others are doing it so they can survive when the SHTF. In either case, it is important to know what to store in your survival pantry.

There are certain types of foods that should be a part of any serious preppers’ pantry. These foods have a long shelf life, perhaps even lasting for decades or even indefinitely. Some of the food items that you may want to consider for this purpose include honey, sugar, salt, baking soda, rice, dried beans, dried corn and wheat.

One question that many people have when it comes to storing food is if they should choose processed foods for the pantry. To be certain, it is easy to find processed foods and many of us may include those types of foods in our diet on a regular basis. They are palatable and tend to have a long shelf life, even though they are not the healthiest choice that is out there.

There are many options for processed foods that can make an excellent part of the survival pantry. For example, any type of bullion product should be included in the pantry because it can make food palatable and it contains a lot of salt. It also has a very long shelf life, so there isn’t a need to rotate it regularly.

Many other types of processed foods can also be a part of your survival pantry but they may need to be rotated more frequently. This type of food is something that many of us may enjoy eating if we are in a survival situation. As long as you rotate the stock so that the food doesn’t go bad, there’s nothing wrong with including a few of these items in your pantry.

That being said, the best choice is to include whole foods that are going to survive for the long-term. For example, white rice and wheat can last in a survival pantry for decades. They are very inexpensive, so you can purchase large sacks of them to make storage easy. They also are a source of high quality calories, so they may end up making up the bulk of your food after a disaster strikes.

As long as you keep your survival pantry organized, rotate your food regularly and label things properly, there’s no reason why you can’t add some processed food to the mix. It will not necessarily make a difference between your surviving or not compared to whole foods, but it can make your life more interesting when you are waiting for the storm to pass.
